Her material is the omnipresent flood of images—analog and digital. Her tools are scissors and glue, because the Swiss artist Sabine Hertig (b. 1982) works in the classical medium of collage and in the process integrates images from conventional print media as well as information from social networks.
They are legible pictorial elements, known content, and recognizable motifs, and yet it seems impossible to assign a narrative to her works, to describe them, or even to grasp them in their complexity. Rather, when looking at them we are pulled into a vortex composed of countless individual images that constantly divert our gaze and pull us along. Yet Hertig’s approach to the photographic components of her Landscapes is decidedly painterly, creating compositions of black-and-white transitions and shades of gray or resulting in visual powerful explosions of color, as in her most recent color collages.
