6 > (3+3) is for once not a mathematical formula but rather an “artistic” one. Niggi Messerli, who is responsible for the Kunsthalle Palazzo in Liestal, wanted to organize a rendezvous at his institution for artists from Basel and French-speaking Switzerland. As the initiator of this project, he invited two curators to that end: Fredy Hadorn, a gallerist in Basel, and Karine Tissot, a curator in Geneva. Niggi Messerli selected three names from those proposed by Fredy Hadorn and submitted them to Karine Tissot, who proposed three artists of her own. What resulted from this artistic rendezvous? Sabine Hertig designs collages in her paintings, whereas Nicholas Leverington produces three-dimensional collages from recycled materials. The art of the miniature is the common denominator of the stamps by Maurice Calanca and the small painted cartoon images of Ladina Gaudenz. Last but not least, sometimes a connection emerges where there is none. This is true of the final duo: The response to colorful paintings by Carlo Aloe is the radical black-and-white forms of the works of Emilie Ding. The exhibition deliberately avoids emphasizing the aforementioned connection between the works or the lack thereof and seeks above all to offer insight into a sextet of Swiss artists.
